Purpose!
Gym circuit day today, a tough workout, for me anyway.
I usually listen to music when I train at the gym whereas today I decided to listen to a podcast.
Caught up in the workout, the podcast & my own thoughts, I reconfirmed something to myself.
The gym is a big part of my life, it gives me purpose. It always has since I started it back as a teenager.
Over the years for a load of reasons I’ve loved it, gone away from it, been frustrated by it, cried over it even, yet I always end up going back to it.
It makes me tick I guess, so I keep doing it. I realised again today what I realised a long time ago….what I do there is all up to me & all down to me. The gym doesn’t care if I turn up, if I make progress or not, how can it!? It’s a gym 😂.
Hard exercise pushes back against me, I have to go through it every time & keep doing it, I aim for each time to be better than the last time.
In the moment itself I often want to quit, I don’t though, I wont allow myself to, because despite feeling good for a fleeting moment I know how shit I will feel later knowing I did. When I have gotten through it, the feeling I have is great. Its another one ticked off until next time. An individual achievement in a chain of many.
I believe this is the essence of any & all training.
We’re developing the will to finish what we started no matter how much we may want to give up.
Some of us are naturally going to be better than others, we can’t do anything about that, we can however work harder than anyone else if we find the grit to keep on keeping on.
This applies to everything in life. We’re defining our character in the things we do, learning & growing. The person we become will transfer to everything else we do.
A key thing to realise within this is that you have to love what you do! If you don’t you will not go through this process every day, week, month or year. So how can you then expect to build consistency in the longer term?
Make the effort to try out lots of things, then choose and apply yourself to something. Commit to it, make no excuses & decide to keep doing it.
I’m convinced this outlook & approach would reduce many things that are wrong in society at the moment.
You’ll improve your health if you go about it properly, you’ll eat better because you’ll want to & probably have to & your self worth will increase, so you’ll automatically feel better.
You’ll grow your resilience living this way, you’ll learn what discipline, determination & consistency will bring to your life.
No matter who you are or what your circumstances there’s something you can do & something you can commit to getting better at.
Go and find it, commit to it & see where it leads.
What’s the alternative? Ask yourself this often.
Do not choose to be a victim of life or circumstance. Be your own warrior in spite of them!
